I’d eaten the breakfast feast at dawn, then slept for a full twenty-four hours, waking up in an empty bed the next day.

Ty was on his computer. He shut it down as soon as he saw me. “Feeling better?”

“Much. I can’t believe I slept for so long. I thought you were staying with me.” I patted the bed.

“I was restless. Ended up sleeping on the couch both nights.”

I rose and dressed. There was no evidence of anyone having slept there, although he could have put away his blanket, or not used one. Something was up. “So you’re still good with everything?”

“Definitely.” He kissed me sweetly. His hair was damp and smelled of almonds and ginger, a shampoo they made from fresh ingredients at the general store.

“Good. I thought we might visit Chief and his pack today, then use them to help scout out the rogues. Get your gun and I’ll put together some supplies. We’ll go as soon as we’re both ready.”

Someone knocked and Ty answered. “Come in, Jaycee.”

“I’m sorry to bother you.”

“You’re not bothering us.” Ty said.

“I… I just wanted to talk to Doc.”

“That’s me, but you can also call me Dex.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“Sit down, honey,” Ty said.

I sat across from her and held out my hand. “It’s nice to officially meet you.”

“Thank you.” Her eyes were red, her cheeks wet with tears. “I’m so sorry mama scratched you. Are you healing?”

“I’m absolutely fine. She loves you. You’re lucky to have a mama like Margie.”

“I know it. Thank you for saving me. And… and the cub… Although, it might not be…a…a cub.” Jaycee wiped her face.

“You’re pregnant?” My heart went out to the young female.

“I’m pretty sure. My scent changed last night. My grandma says it can happen that fast.”

“Who’s the dad?” I asked.

“Luke, I think. He was so nice to me at first. Told me I was beautiful. Seemed so interested in how I lived and everything. We’d spent a few weeks together. I’d sneak out and…and he’d be watching for me.”

Luke was part of Joey’s gang. Followed his orders as if Joey were the alpha. He and Luke had used Jaycee to get information about Half Moon. “You said you only think Luke is the dad. What happened?”

“Luke and I were… We were together, and Joey showed up. Said he’d tell the pack alpha if Luke didn’t share. I didn’t want to, but Luke said it would really be bad if his alpha found out. He’d be whipped or imprisoned. I loved him. Or I thought I did.”

Ty handed her a handkerchief. “You’re doing great, sweetie.” She blew her nose and continued.

“Luke had always been so gentle, so I didn’t think it would be any big deal if it meant Luke wouldn’t get into trouble.” She glanced down at her lap. “It was awful. I started to fight, to scream. They hit me. Even Luke. Hurt me. Laughed when I cried.” She covered her face, her next words muffled. “I kept clawing at them, but I hit my head and passed out.
